Melbourne has been in lockdown for about 22 weeks so far (not counting)... not including the few weeks off for stage something-or-other, where we kind of felt a bit free and toilet paper was at everyones disposal again, but really, we weren't. If we really look back the year has gone along the lines of, March, April, April, April, April, April, August..

At this point in time, who can remember what stage we were in, on what date, at what time, in which part of Victoria! It’s all a bit of a blur! A very slow-moving, stressful blur.

We can tell you something for sure though. If you’re a parent or care-giver, and you’ve been working, parenting, home-schooling, surviving or a combination of all four, then you are tired. And so are your loved ones. Young and old. Desperate for something to brighten the long days and bring a smile to your kids faces who have been stuck inside all day trying to navigate uncertain times.

Cue, Kids Disco Parties.

That’s us!

Your magnificent Friday afternoon saviour, who ride in on their digital disco steads fully equipped with zoom links, rad tunes and fluorescent  bandanas to engage your children and bring a bit of normality. And most importantly, 30 minutes where you could sit back with a cuppa and just… breathe!

So all of us at KDP sat down, took our disco shoes off.. for just a moment, and worked out a plan on how to take this successful disco company, make it virtual and in keeping with our motto bring the disco to you - pandemic, or not!

We are now running 30 minute, high energy discos via private Zoom party rooms! That’s right! You, your family, your friends, wherever they may be living can jump online, join a zoom party room and disco together just like you would if your birthday party was happening under normal circumstances! We have the best fun disco-ing with you, and go above and beyond to make sure that you’ll have epic singalongs, dance challanges, and most importantly still get to celebrate your birthday with your closet mates!

We are also around to disco with your schools, kinders or your community group!

If any of this tickles your fancy, check out our disco packages and reach out!

The KDP team would love nothing more than to rock out with you in your living room! Just name a day, and we’ll be there. Virtually of course.

Oh, and the best bit… you’re at home by yourself! No-one cares if you’ve brushed your teeth, or your hair! Let along have matching socks on!

And to that we say - Bring! It! On!

Hosting a Hygienic Kids Disco Party

Picture
As we head into the cooler months, we welcome snuggly jumpers, wooly socks for disco sliding down the hall and cups of tea by the fire! Unfortunately though, it can be a time we often ‘welcome’ some unwanted nasties that tend to hang around during cold and flu season! Rude, because we don’t remember inviting them to the party!

Here at Kids Disco Parties we have a few handy tips to help keep it clean and ensure the nasty bugs don't spread during your disco party.

1. Upon Arrival..
When your guests arrive, initiate safe greeting practises through promoting pats on the back, silent high-5s or a sweet dance battle!

2. Before we start...
It's essential to have hand sanitiser or offer a place to wash hands at the beginning of the party and prior to consuming food and drink. Supervise the washing of hands encouraging the use  of warm soapy water for 20 seconds. A great opportunity to practice singing 'Happy Birthday'.

3. Did someone say snacks?
When planning party food, rather than having share plates or communal bowls consider food options that make it easy to serve as individual servings. This limits germs sharing, and means no one will take your last slice of pizza (double bonus!). When serving ensure you use tongs and wear gloves (just in case it's you carrying the nasties).

4. Let's eat the snacks!
Before eating promote hand washing. Ensure all opportunities to consume food and drink are kept to specific scheduled break times. This allows you to remind party goers to wash their hands prior to eating. It's also best practice to cover all food outside of eating time.

5. If you gotta sneeze...
Remind guests to cover their mouth if they sneeze or cough using their elbow. If this particular move is done on the dance floor, you can turn it into a cool move! Left elbow, right elbow, left el.. sorry, I just imagined a sneeze routine and it was AWESOME. This gives everyone a chance to learn that cool sneeze dance move for more epic dance floor battles upon your return! Remember also to put any tissues straight into the bin, and sanitise after!

6 - 8 Weeks before your party...

Select your date and book the entertainment! Get in nice and early to ensure you can secure your date preference and timings. It’s best to avoid public holidays and big community events, like local sports grand final dates or times when many of your guests might have team sport commitments/training. It's never too early to book at KDP entertainer, we can book out up to 8 weeks in advance.

HOME: We recommend hosting your disco party inside. A garage space or large living room is the perfect space for a disco. It's always a bonus if you can darken the space to help the LED disco lighting pop!

OR

VENUE: If you don't have the space at home, you might consider a local community space. Local Kinders, scout halls or community hubs are a great place to start. When booking an external venue there are some additional things to consider. Always inspect and visit the venue to ensure the following:
- Access to adequate power sources
- Availability of tables for you to place food and drinks
- You have access to the venue at least 1 hour at either side of your party times for set up and pack down
- Fans/Air-conditioning (required all year round, but especially if you are booking a summer disco)
- Easy access/parking available near the venue
- Ask if the venue requires Public Liability Insurance certificate. As KDP are fully insured, we can provide this.

4 - 6 Weeks to go...

Finalise your guest list: We recommend ensuring a minimum of 15 children with the ultimate number of guests between 20 - 30. Consider that up to 20% of your invited guests may not be able to attend, so inviting a few extras is always a good idea.

Guest Emergency Contact List: Do you know the phone number the parent/guardian for each child attending your event? Start compiling a list of emergency contacts. Have a hard copy of this at the party with a pen on hand so that you can capture this information from parents/guardians as kids are dropped off.

Design and send your invitations:
Must have items: Date, Start & End Time, Address & RSVP (name, number & date)
Recommended additions: Allergies or dietary requirements
Optional items: Dress code or theme and any specific venue instructions

We can take care of invitations for you. The KDP Ultimate & Flexi Disco Party Packages come with a tailored digital invite which you can print yourself or we can print for you (*printing costs apply). There are two awesome designs to choose from - Disco Ticket or VIP Guest Pass.

1 week to go...

Party Supplies: It's now time to start counting the sleeps and preparing for the week ahead. Start with compiling two shopping lists. A supplies list and a food/drinks list. We have seen many discos in our time and the most successful are those who have kept it SIMPLE. Fruit and icy poles an absolute hit for a quick snack during the break. Limit your decorations as #WeBringTheDisco and the LED disco lighting effects create an instant party atmosphere in any space.

Confirm RSVP & Final Numbers: Follow up your final numbers and be sure to let us know of any special needs.

Chat to your DJ: Your DJ will make contact with you in the days leading a up to discuss the final logistics and go through the plan/schedule for event. You DJ will be able to provide great advice for the success of your party. You can read our top tips for hosting the Ultimate Disco Party on this blog!

Song Requests: Whilst the KDP crew will play all tunes kids know and love, we also like to hear from the birthday boy or girl with a few of their favourite tunes so we can tailor a playlist to suit their music taste. If your party package includes the KDP online Song Request competition, remind the party guest to jump onto our website and request their song for a chance to win.

1 Sleep to go...

Charge the camera: or make sure you have room on your phone to take LOTS of action shots!

Pack the party favour bags: if you are creating some take home party bags, this is something you can easily prepare the day before.

Place food on order: Pizzas are seriously the easiest and best way to feed the little party rockers. If you are ordering pizzas to be delivered, have them pre-ordered and arrange for them to be delivered just before the half time break. If pizzas aren't your thing, places like Subway or your local supermarket can create party platters which can be collected on the morning of your party.

Pick up the cake (or bake it): Check out some of the #cakespiration ideas on our Instagram.

Grocery Shopping: Grab your food and drinks supplies list and hit the shops.

On the day...

The Space: if you are having your party at home, clear the space of all large furniture items and darken the room as best you can. If you are hosting it at a venue, create two zones - a space for food and a space to dance. Keep all food a drink hidden until the break time to give the DJs the best chance of engaging the children in the disco party activities.

Balloons on the letterbox: It makes it nice and easy for your guests (and DJ) to find your party. Take it to the next level and get the birthday boy or girl to design a party sign to welcome their guests!

To help make planning a disco party even easier, we've created the KDP Disco Party Planning Checklist free for you to download.

Disco Party Decoration Ideas Using Glow Sticks - Disco Party Decorations

Disco Party Decoration Ideas Using Glow Sticks

Glow sticks are one of our favourite disco party essentials here at Kids Disco Parties. They will not only light up the dance floor, they are super FUN and not to mention cheap. If you have crafty kids or are simply looking for ways to get the kids involved in some pre-party disco party decorating we think you will LOVE some of our nifty disco party decoration ideas using glow sticks. They are all super affordable and simple enough for the kids to make so they’ll be entertained for hours.

1. Glow Stick Balloons

Disco Party Decoration Ideas - glowing balloons
Via: Listotic
Filling balloons with glow sticks is a pretty fancy disco party decoration idea for your kid’s birthday party. We suggest using white or light coloured balloons so they glow extra bright! Once the balloons are half filled with air, crack a glow stick or two and carefully insert, then finish blowing up.  Scatter on the table or with an adults help why not hang them upside down from the roof for some extra WOW factor

2. Glow Stick Coke Bottles

Disco Party Decoration Ideas - Glowing bottles
Via: Pinterist
To create these colourful masterpieces, carefully cut the top off a glow stick and pour the contents into an empty coke bottle. If possible we suggest using glass bottles but plastic ones will shine just as bright! Secure the lid, shake it about and voila, glow in the dark bottles! For safety we recommend you get an adult to help you with this one and DO NOT DRINK from these bottles.

3. Glow Stick Chandelier

Disco Party Decoration Ideas - Glowing Chandelier
Via: Grey Grey Designs
If you love getting crafty, you’ll love this one!

What You’ll need:
  • Lightweight hoop (this will be the base of the mobile) It might be time to raid the toy box for an old Hula Hoop, Nanna’s sewing kit for an old embroidery hoop or if you’re feeling super crafty grab some an old hose and make your own!
  • Fishing Wire (we recommend clear)
  • Paint (if you want to change the colour of your chandelier base)
  • Several packets of glow sticks
How to make your mobile:
  • If you want to change the colour of your mobile base, get painting!!
  • While you’re waiting for the paint to dry, start carefully cutting pieces of fishing wire. You can cut these all the same length, or different lengths, its up to you!
  • Cut 4 equal length pieces of fishing wire and secure evenly around your hoop. These will be used to hang your mobile so tie the other end of the 4 pieces together.
  • If you’re doing a multi level mobile, you’ll also need to cut some fishing wire to tie your 2 hoops together
  • Tie one end of each piece of fishing wire to the hoop and a glow stick to the other end
  • Before your party guests arrive carefully crack your glow sticks
  • Ask an adult to help you hang in your desired place
  • Get ready for the crowd to go WILD over your fancy creation!

4. Glow Stick Wall Art

Disco Party Decoration Ideas, Disco Party Decorations using glow sticks
Via: Kids Disco Parties (@Instagram)
This is such a FUN idea to welcome guests to your child’s disco party! Using packets of glow sticks get the kids to create messages and pictures of their choice! Once you’re happy with your layout use some clear scotchguard to stick it to the wall.

** Parents – we recommend you hang up a black plastic sheet (grab one from your local hardware store for $10) on the wall before the messages get stuck on. This will not only help the glow sticks stand out but you’ll avoid any paint stripping disasters!

5. Neon/Glow Table Setting

Disco Party Decoration Ideas - Glow in the dark table setting
Via: B Lovely Events
This one is super easy and such a clever way to jazz up your snacks table! Put glow sticks around plates and cups for your party guests. Stick glow sticks to clear cutlery and create coasters for your cups. You can also put glow sticks under ice in the drinks bucket for some extra glow!

6. Glow Stick Wreath

Disco Party Decoration Ideas - glowing wreath
Via: The Little Big Blog
Wreaths are not just for Christmas. Make one for your disco party decoration too!

What you’ll need:
  • Multiple sets of hands (including 1 set of adult hands)
  • Foam wreath (you can pick one up from Spotlight or even pop in to your local florist)
  • Several packets of bracelet glow sticks
  • Hot glue gun (to be used by adults only)

How to make your wreath:
  • One set of hands will need to be in charge of cracking and joining the bracelet glow sticks
  • Kindly ask your adult to start blobbing bits of glue onto the wreath
  • Any left over hands can now start placing the glow sticks around the wreath, making sure they are stuck on securely
  • Repeat these steps until the wreath is covered with enough glow sticks for your liking
  • Once complete, kindly ask your adult helper to hang on the door. Your guests will know they are in the right place and its time to enter your DISCO PARTY

7. Glow Stick Centerpiece

Disco Party Decoration Ideas, Glow Stick Table Decoration
Via: Darice
We just LOVE this one! It’s super cheap but looks a million bucks!

Pop down to the Reject Shop or Spotlight and pick up a pack of 50 Glow Sticks (should set you back $5) and also some large polystyrene ball halves.

Crack the glow sticks and push them into the polystyrene. Ta-Da! A super quick centerpiece that will impress everyone at your party!

What crafty glow stick ideas have you done at home?

Tips For Hosting a Kids Disco Party - Kids Parties Melbourne

Tips For Hosting The Ultimate Disco Party For Kids

We’ve been to our fair share of disco parties for kids over the past six years and have literally seen it all! We decided to put our heads together and bring you our top 6 hot tips for hosting the ultimate disco party for kids so you and your party guests will be set to have the best party ever. After all the last thing you want is your child's disco party to be a disco flop!

Tip 1: Host your disco party inside

Nothing clears a dance floor faster than gale force winds and thunderstorms! With Melbourne being… well Melbourne, the weather is so unpredictable, if possible we recommend you host your child’s disco party inside. It will not only keep your party guests warm and dry but a more confined space acts as extra crowd control, our beats will sound way better and you’ll get the full effect of the super bright LED disco lights!

Tip 2: Keep food and sugary drinks for the scheduled break

It's not a party unless there is party food, however we’ve noticed food is a big distraction for your party rockers, especially the shy kids! To give us the best shot at engaging your party guests we recommend keeping food, lollies and snacks to the scheduled break time.

Tip 3: Keep chairs off the dancefloor

Ditch those chairs! We’re all here to P-A-R-T-Y! Where possible remove as many chairs from the space as possible. Nowhere to sit means your party guests will get their dancing shoes on and engage in all the activities your DJ has in stall.

Tip 4: Less Decorations is More!

Balloons, streamers, themed decorations, it’s a party right? Wrong! We go by the mantra less is more when it comes to throwing a kids disco party. Our DJs come to every kids disco fully equipped with sound and lighting so you really don’t need to do much more! The darker the space the brighter the lights so if you’re itching to hang something up we recommend popping down to your local hardware store and grabbing yourself a large black plastic sheet for 10 bucks. Once the house lights go down and the disco lights shine everyone will be ready to hit the d-floor! PLUS…Less decorations also means less things to pack up! #winning

Tip 5: Avoid Balloons

As we’re all about safety first here at Kids Disco Parties we’ve come to notice balloons usually cause more harm than good! While we all have a giggle at the first person to speak with a helium voice, its actually very dangerous! Also, too many balloons on a dance floor full of energetic dancers is a recipe for disaster! We want to keep you and all your party guests free from injury so ditch the balloons and let the disco lights be the star of the show!

Tip 6: Keep it Simple

Candy tables, face painting, photo booths, petting zoos…You get the jist! Too many elements can easily backfire on your birthday party extravaganza. By inviting Kids Disco Parties into your home we make sure you get bang for your buck. If there are too many things happening at the one time your party guests will be so overwhelmed and this will impact our engagement with the kids at the disco party. If you do want to include some extras at your child’s party we recommend having them prior to the disco commencing!
